1996 Château Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc
Château Sociando-Mallet is an unclassed Bordeaux wine, that is never outclassed, especially when searching for muscular wines displaying raw power, structure and richness. The absence of said classification is due to its owner Jean Gautreau, who is not a believer in such classifications Under the careful watch of owner Jean Gautreau, who is personally present and in charge of every facet of production (a very rare occurrence in Bordeaux), Sociando produces wines of such strength and power, that they can be pretty brutal in youth but soften into something miraculous with years in bottle.
2016 Bruno Colin ‘Morgeot’ Chassagne-Montrachet
Bruno farms eight hectares of land, in thirty different parcels scattered over five communes, with sometimes as little as just a few rows per parcel. To farm under these circumstances is quintessentially Burgundian, where the old Napoleonic codes of inheritance (evolved from Roman law) divide property equally among offspring. Parcels farmed by any one family continue to get smaller and smaller as they are distributed among relatives. Bruno’s style shows beautiful balance, both aromatically and texturally, while showcasing the delicate minerality and nuanced complexity of each wine.
