1996 Château Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc
Château Sociando-Mallet is an unclassed Bordeaux wine, that is never outclassed, especially when searching for muscular wines displaying raw power, structure and richness. Château Sociando-Mallet is in the commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, ten kilometers north of Pauillac, in the Haut-Médoc appellation. The vineyards are situated north of the Saint Estephe appellation and in many ways share the same terroir you find in Pauillac and in St. Estephe. Under the careful watch of owner Jean Gautreau, who is personally present and in charge of every facet of production (a very rare occurrence in Bordeaux), Sociando produces wines of such strength and power, that they can be pretty brutal in youth but soften into something miraculous with years in bottle.
Chassagne Montrachet sits in the southern most commune of the cote de beaune, boasting over 20 Premier Cru’s. It tends to be weightier, more rounded, and stronger in overt fruit characteristics than its equally impressive neighboring villages.
