NoMI Gallery Artist-in-Residence

Step into NoMI Gallery, an elevated artistic haven nestled on the 7th floor, right at the doorstep of NoMI Kitchen. Crafted to celebrate the vibrant talent of local Chicago-based artists, this unique space embodies Park Hyatt Chicago's passion for art through a rotating flow of artists.

CURRENT EXHIBIT
"The Colorful & Curious Work of Chad Kouri" at NoMI Gallery

Moving into his 20th year as a proud west-side resident, many of Chicago’s vast and varied traditions influence the artist and performer, notably architecture, social justice and community organizing, visual communication, improvisation, and Chicago’s monumental history of resistance music and jazz.

Pocket-sized intuitive collages hang next to large and lively graphic paintings meant to assist us in slowing down and being curious. Stretching throughout the gallery, Kouri’s modular reflective works—known as Reflection Pools—will gift visitors with an ever changing display of bouncing color and light as they move through the space. Drawings and paintings, known as Jazz Movement Studies, strewn with musical markings meant to represent sounds from various live music presentations around the city become dancing partners with passers-by.

Meant to emphasize Kouri’s curiosity-led mixed-disciplinary approach, this six-month exhibition will represent a wide range of works made over the past decade-plus.

About the Artist:
Chad Kouri is a Chicago-based working artist, musician, and storyteller interested in the healing powers of color, sound, and abstraction. His mixed-race identity is mirrored by his multidisciplinary studio practice with interests focusing broadly on social justice and community empowerment, color theory, visual communication, improvisation, radical joy, and Chicago’s monumental history of resistance music, jazz, and the avant-garde. Utilizing a wide range of skills and strategies, Kouri reminds us to stay curious and make time for play, rest, and introspection, enabling us more bandwidth for personal exploration, grounding, acceptance, and empowerment.
